How Does The Pinhole® Surgical Technique Cure Gum Recession?

Gum Recession Graphic

Do you feel pain or sensitivity in your teeth when brushing? Have you noticed your teeth becoming a bit longer? You may be experiencing a receding gumline. Receding gums can be caused by many different factors and can have a significant impact on your daily life. A few causes of receding gums include:

  • Brushing too hard
  • Gum disease
  • Partial dentures that don’t fit correctly
  • Smoking or tobacco use

The Pinhole Surgical Technique

When gums recede, open spaces develop between the teeth and gums. If left untreated, bacteria can enter the open spaces and cause gum disease and inflammation, also known as periodontal disease. Receding gums can also cause exposed roots of the teeth, leading to increased sensitivity when eating or drinking.  Fortunately, there are multiple ways to treat receding gums, including new and innovative techniques. Dr Mark Iacobelli and Dr Stephen Sala and their artistic team located in North Royalton, OH offer a minimally invasive and unique treatment for receding gums known as the Pinhole® Surgical Technique (PST™). Normally, receding gums are treated by gum grafting, a surgical removal of the gum tissue from one location to another, and can be quite messy and uncomfortable. PST uses a laser to make a tiny pinhole in your gums to re-position the gums to cover the exposed tooth. PST is a great alternative treatment for receding gums and can offer:

  • Treatment for multiple teeth during one visit, reducing office visits.
  • Less bleeding due to fewer incisions
  • Faster recover time
  • Reduces risk of gum disease
